Residents, businesses, and community organisations rolled up their sleeves on Mandela Day to breathe new life into the Hill Street Walkway as part of a major cleaning campaign led by the Randburg Precinct Management District (RPMD).The initiative saw volunteers and local companies unite to remove litter and restore pride to one of Randburg’s key public spaces. The effort forms part of RPMD’s ongoing drive to create a cleaner, safer, and more attractive environment for residents and visitors alike.
Mary Gillett-De Klerk, General Manager of the Randburg Precinct Management District, praised the turnout and issued a heartfelt call to action. “We are asking all residents and businesses from Randburg and surrounding areas to come through and help create the Randburg we want,” she said. “Together we can make a real difference.”
Xiaza Security Services was among the businesses that actively participated. Director Debby Bernard expressed her enthusiasm for the project. “I am excited that our company is part of this cleaning campaign,” she said. “We will continue to support the efforts of RPMD to achieve a clean and safe Randburg.”
The Randburg Square mall’s dedicated team of volunteers used the day to revitalise the kiddies play area within the shopping precinct. Organisers encouraged more residents to get involved in the ongoing revitalisation efforts, saying community ownership is key to sustaining these improvements.
The hospitality sector also showed strong support. Prisca Hlatshwayo, General Manager of Mercure Hotels Randburg, explained why her team joined the clean-up. “Randburg used to be a hub for sporting groups who came to lodge at hospitality facilities in the area,” Hlatshwayo said. “Now we are losing business to places like Mpumalanga and Durban because of the state of cleanliness and safety. We joined this campaign to help restore the clean face of Randburg and attract business back into the area.”
Organisers described the Mandela Day event as a resounding success and a stepping stone toward long-term urban renewal. Clean City SA CEO Dalu Cele, who supported the campaign, urged even greater participation ahead of the next major clean-up event scheduled for 22 August 2026. “We need more Randburg businesses and community members to register and join us,” Cele said. “This is about making Randburg safe and clean for everyone who lives, works, and visits here.”
